Progress on Riverside Park in Lublin
The announced tender for the project is another step that brings us closer to realizing this extraordinary endeavor. The Bystrzyca River’s surroundings need proper development to restore its former significance and place in the city’s structure. The concept of creating a new park along the city’s stretch of the river – Riverside Park – fits into this stream. For several years, we have planned to make this area, with its unique natural and landscape values, available in the form of a naturalistic park. The priority in design will be to provide access to the riverbank, thus opening it up to our residents, says Krzysztof Żuk, Mayor of Lublin.
The city has announced a tender to select a contractor for comprehensive project-cost documentation and comprehensive author’s supervision for the task “Construction of Riverside Park – construction of a residential beach near the Łąkowa estate and a pedestrian footbridge over the Bystrzyca River in Lublin” – phase I. The scope of the order includes the preparation of complete documentation for selected stages or their parts based on the “Detailed Concept for the Development of Riverside Park in Lublin” and several new elements not covered by this study, such as the reconstruction of soccer and basketball fields, the construction of a dog run, and access to the pedestrian footbridge over the Bystrzyca.
The heart of Riverside Park will be its section along the multi-family housing area near Medalionów Street, where a beach intended mainly for the residents of the Łąkowa estate is located. This place is an area of natural meadow greenery with riparian vegetation along the river’s edge and freely shaped clumps of trees and shrubs. The area for the residential beach is currently partially developed but lacks recreational equipment, and the existing ones need renewal.
As part of the investment, riverside platforms situated on the riverbanks, descending to the water’s surface, will be created. The platforms will serve kayakers, anglers, and walkers. The section of the river “between the embankments” will be made accessible through a system of footpaths close to the river and resting pontoons over the water. This part of Riverside Park will be equipped with recreational and educational facilities: paths, playgrounds, footbridges with viewpoints, a platform for walkers, anglers, and kayakers, as well as places for artistic activities in the landscape, land art, and an outdoor gallery. There will be natural beaches for sunbathing and beach volleyball courts and playgrounds. Small architecture will not be lacking – outdoor loungers on grassy beaches, rest annexes along main pedestrian routes, permanent hammocks, seats, picnic tables, drinking fountains, and bike stands. To diversify the aesthetics of the entire boulevard, additional greenery plantings are planned. There will be a place for food trucks with a public toilet. The area will be equipped with technical infrastructure for lighting, access to electricity, water, sewage, and monitoring. The existing soccer field will be modernized, a dog run will be created, and a park library will be built.
The fields will receive new surfaces, synthetic water-permeable for basketball and grass for soccer. Goals and baskets will be renovated, and the entire facilities will be lit. The dog run, to be created in this area, will have an area of not less than 1500 m², a fence with two entrances, benches, bins, and a dog toilet. Additionally, it is planned to design a connection of the natural surface pedestrian path with the pedestrian footbridge over the Bystrzyca.
All architectural and construction projects, environmental, and executive documentation should be prepared within 16 months from the date of contract signing. The designer will also be obliged to provide author’s supervision over the investment until the end of July 2028. The project “Construction of Riverside Park (future documentation)” is included in the Lublin City’s Multiannual Financial Forecast.
