BitStream: Innovating data transmission for global infrastructure

In today’s world, the safety and reliability of critical infrastructure depend on precise data transmission and accurate time synchronisation. These are the cornerstones of sectors such as energy, transport, and telecommunications, where even the smallest disruption can have significant consequences. In this interview, we speak with Dariusz Pietrzyk, CEO of BitStream, a Lublin-based company that specialises in providing innovative solutions to ensure the smooth operation of these industries. Dariusz takes us through the story of BitStream’s beginnings, the challenges they’ve overcome, and the advanced technologies behind their data transmission systems. He also shares how their solutions are already making an impact in markets across the globe, from Australia to Argentina. Read on to learn more about BitStream’s journey, and their future plans for growth.

What were the beginnings of your company, and what inspired you to start your business?

Our company began as a project initiated by three technology enthusiasts who wanted to change the way data is transmitted in key sectors of the economy. When establishing the startup, we focused on delivering innovative data transmission solutions.
The inspiration came from observing the rapidly changing world of technology. We saw how fibre optics and Ethernet were revolutionising the market, and how the internet was becoming an essential service for both industry and business. We realised that we could fill a niche in sectors such as energy and industry. That was when we decided to take action.

How many employees does your company have, and who are the key members of your team?

Currently, BitStream employs around 50 people, most of whom are highly skilled engineers and specialists in telecommunications, computer science, and electronics. Key members of the team are experts with many years of experience, responsible for the development of our products and their implementation in the market.

How would you describe the solution/product developed by your company in simple terms?

In simple terms, we create systems that ensure reliable data transmission and precise time synchronisation – which are fundamental to the functioning of critical infrastructure such as energy and transport.
We combine advanced components such as time servers, Ethernet switches, routers, and software to create complete solutions that guarantee stability and security where they are most needed.
Our goal is to deliver technology that makes the world work more smoothly, accurately, and reliably – every day.

Which part of the solution is developed in Lublin, and what influenced this decision?

All key processes – from design and software development to hardware production and testing – are carried out in Lublin, where BitStream’s headquarters are located. It is here that our innovative solutions are created to support critical infrastructure worldwide.
Initially, the choice of Lublin was a natural one, as it is our hometown. Over time, it has also turned out to be an excellent strategic decision – Lublin offers access to highly skilled specialists, thanks to its proximity to universities, as well as a dynamically developing business environment.

What distinguishes your product/service/solution in terms of innovation and high-tech?

Our products stand out because they are designed to function in extreme conditions while ensuring precise time synchronisation, which is crucial in sectors such as energy, transport, and defence. We use technologies like MACsec encryption, connection redundancy, and lossless transmission, which provide reliability, security, and the highest level of stability.
As leaders in this field, we guarantee time synchronisation according to the highest standards, ensuring the reliable operation of systems even in the most demanding environments.

Do similar systems exist on the market? What advantages does your solution have compared to similar technologies available on the market?

Similar systems do exist on the market, but our solutions stand out in several key aspects. Firstly, they are designed to operate in the most demanding industrial conditions, making them resistant to extreme electromagnetic interference typically found in the energy sector, as well as extreme temperatures.
Secondly, our systems offer precise time synchronisation and redundancy features that minimise the risk of failure. Additionally, we use advanced security measures such as MACsec encryption. As a result, BitStream solutions offer a higher level of reliability and greater flexibility compared to systems available on the market.

Have you received any awards or distinctions for your activities?

Yes, we are a repeatedly award-winning technology leader. In recent years, we have received the prestigious “Forbes Diamonds 2024” for dynamic growth and financial results, as well as the “Business Gazelles 2023” award for the fastest-growing companies. We were also honoured with the title of “Innovation Leader 2023,” recognising our commitment to the development of modern technologies.

Who is your target audience?

The main target audience for BitStream consists of companies operating in the energy, industrial automation, transport, and telecommunications sectors. The company primarily delivers its solutions to dynamic industries involved in critical infrastructure.

Where has your solution gained the most popularity?

Our solutions have gained the most popularity in projects related to electricity distribution, which is crucial for national security. Our systems have also been applied in border monitoring, high-speed roads, and industrial installations – anywhere where reliability and security are a priority.

What is your presence in foreign markets like?

Our presence in foreign markets is a priority for us. Over the past three years, our products have been delivered to 17 countries, including Australia, Vietnam, Argentina, and Ecuador. We are building a continuously expanding network of distributors worldwide, which allows us to increase our global reach.

What are the company’s plans for the future?

Our goal is to establish ourselves as a leading international provider of data transmission systems and time synchronisation solutions for critical infrastructure. We are focusing on research, implementing innovative solutions, and expanding our presence in foreign markets. This is a challenging but ambitious goal that – as a company from Lublin – we have the potential to achieve.

What actions do you think the City of Lublin and its institutional partners could take to develop the city’s potential as a centre for high-tech creation?

The City of Lublin and its partners are already doing an excellent job of fostering technological development. To further strengthen the city’s potential, it is crucial to support start-ups and offer tax incentives for technology companies. The goal should be to encourage companies to invest in Lublin in areas beyond just R&D departments, such as manufacturing or operational structures.
Additionally, close cooperation between universities and industry – through internship programmes, research projects, or innovation centres – can significantly enhance Lublin’s position as a technological hub.
